NEW UNIVERSAL ACCESS PROGRAM - SUMMER 2007
We are excited to announce that Community Boating will be offering sailing instruction to those with special needs this summer on its fleet of adapted keel Mercurys and Sonars. Thanks to the partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), Community Boating and Genzyme Corporation, we will be offering a total of 20 program days on Thursdays and alternating Saturday and Sundays, starting on June 28th. "Sailing for all" has taken on an even greater meaning this year with the opportunity that these boats, staff, and programming create. For more information, contact Marcin Kunicki, Universal Access Program Director, and see you on the water.

RACING - NEW SKIPPER DAY
Have you raced as a crew and want more time on the tiller? Have you already raced as a skipper but want to maneuver with the speed and confidence of the winners? Or are you an experienced skipper who is willing to coach newer skippers by crewing for them?
If any of these descriptions fit you and you have a CBI Helmsman rating (or higher), then the New Skipper Day that the Tiller Club will hold on Sunday, June 10th at 9:30 AM may be just the thing to kick your racing up a notch. Experienced skippers will crew for newer skippers in a variety of sailing activities and short races led by Ron Sandstrom, a highly experienced racer and coach who got his start racing at CBI.
The main focus will be on improving the speed and maneuvering skills that often cause places to change during a race: tacking, jibing, and mark rounding. The day will begin and end with brief classroom sessions. Video feedback will be provided. The event fee for new skippers is $15, mainly to cover the cost of providing lunch (the fee is optional for those volunteering to crew/coach).
If you can commit to participating on June 10th as a crew/coach or as a new skipper, e-mail a brief description of your interest and experience to Seth Goodman at racing-info@community-boating.org as soon as possible. The capacity of the event depends on how many experienced skippers are available to crew.

DOCKS, DOCKS, AND MORE DOCKS
The DCR is completing the design, engineering, and permitting for replacing CBI's docks as you read this article. While it is hoped that demolition of the old docks might begin as soon as October, 2007, with projected completion of new docks in the spring of 2008, we are holding our collective breath as the DCR welcomes a new Commissioner and he gets his bearings at the agency. CBI is very fortunate to have worked closely with the Esplanade Association, Union Boat Club, The Solomon Fund, and the DCR to develop the plans for the new docks. Their support has been critical to the project thus far. We'll keep you posted as new information becomes available.
The DCR's Granite Overlooks project Web site has a PDF of the proposed design for CBI's new docks.

PILOT PROJECT - CBI TO OFFER ADVANCED INTRUCTION TO SAILING VOLUNTEERS
Are you committed to the spirit of volunteerism at CBI? Do you have a Helmsman Rating or higher? Are you ready for that next step after the Jib Classes? Then read on.
CBI is pleased to announce a pilot project designed to support sailing volunteers and offer a higher level of sailing instruction beyond the Jib classes. This means scheduled private instruction with a highly qualified sailing instructor.
It may not cost money, but it is not free either. Private instruction will only be available to individuals who commit to a high level of volunteerism on our docks. We need more instructors to give our new sailors informal instruction, teach Orientation, Rigging, and Mainsail classes, to name a few. If you feel you have more to offer CBI as an instructional volunteer please contact Executive Director, Charlie Zechel or Program Director, Tom Moore.

FIRST CHARLES RIVER ONE MILE SWIM - SATURDAY, JULY 21st
The Charles River Swimming Club was founded in 2005 with the dual purpose of organizing competitive swimming events in the Charles River and facilitating the return of public river swimming. The 2006 Charles River One Mile Swim was postponed despite low bacteria levels when an unusually intensive toxic algal bloom rendered the Charles potentially unsafe for swimming for several weeks in the summer of 2006. The race is now scheduled for July 21, 2007.
CBI will be supporting the race by providing safety resources, and Executive Director Charlie Zechel will be competing in the event. Looking forward to the event Zechel said, "My training program is on track. I'm taking it one day at a time and staying focused. I hope there are some other CBI members willing to jump in the race." TIPS & TRICKS
What do I do when my boat is hit by a gust and starts to heal so alarmingly that I take on water? What can I do?
Soggy-Steve
Whenever you are sailing, it is always a good idea to follow the sailor's saying: keep a weather-eye open. Look out for darker patches on the water to windward; this will let you anticipate a gust. When you are hit by a gust, here are some things you can do. You can sheet out, head up, and/or hike out.
Sheeting out will let the wind out of your sails and should level the boat quickly. Once the gust has passed or you feel more comfortable, you can start to retrim the sail. Heading up turns the boat closer to the eye of the wind and also lets you spill some wind out of your sails in most wind conditions and points of sail. And finally, by moving your (and your crew's) weight from the seat to the rail, you can leverage your body weight against the force of the wind. For the high-performance sailor, this should be done in an ease-hike-trim sequence.

VOLUNTEER CORNER
We're gearing up for a summer of great events at CBI, and their success depends largely on volunteers like you! We could use your help in the following targeted areas. Thank you for your time! Without you, Community Boating wouldn't be.

Email subject: volunteer social events Fundraiser helpers Lots of footwork goes into making our yearly fundraiser, this year on Thursday, Sept. 6, a success. And the work's starting now. We're recruiting volunteers for a variety of tasks, including setup, program design, organization of donations, cleanup, etc. This is the source of much of the funding for the Junior Program, and one of the social events of the CBI year. JOKE OF THE DAY
A guy gets shipwrecked. When he wakes up, he's on a beach. The sand is dark red. He can't believe it. The sky is dark red. He walks around a bit and sees that there is dark red grass, dark red birds and dark red fruit on the dark red trees. He's shocked when he finds that his skin is starting to turn dark red too.
"Oh no!!" he says, "I think I've been marooned!!"
