Who Is the 30-Day Learn to Sail and Paddle membership for?
- People who want to learn a new hobby or skill
- People who enjoy outdoors activities
- People that are new to sailing and want to learn to sail
- Adults ages 18+ who can swim
What does the 30-Day Learn to Sail and Paddle include?
The 30-Day Learn to Sail and Paddle is a 30 consecutive day membership from the date of registration which allows you to take all beginner and intermediate classes and instruction for the Mercury sailboats, usage of Mercury sailboats, and you can achieve a Mercury green rating only. This means that you’ll be able to learn the basics about sailing, prepare your Mercury sailboat for sailing, and go sailing on your own in a Mercury sailboat. It also includes classes for kayaking and paddleboarding, as well as usage of kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.
What classes can I take with my membership and what does the rating mean?
Take the Beginner and Intermediate Sailing Classes and get your Mercury Green Rating. You can also take the Paddling Classes and get your Kayak and/or Paddleboard Ratings.
For sailing, you will have access to Orientation, Rigging, and Shore School classes to receive your Mercury Green Rating:
- The first step is to attend an Orientation class. It usually lasts approximately 45 minutes and provides general information about our program and classes, as well as a brief tour of the facility.
- Then, attend a Rigging class that lasts approximately 2 hours and covers everything necessary to set up a boat to go sailing and put a boat away after a sail. After taking the class, you can take the Rigging Test at any time, which consists of rigging, furling, and unrigging a boat on your own while being supervised by our dockstaff.
- Finally, the Shore School class lasts approximately 2 hours and is entirely on land in a classroom. This class covers all basic sailing theory, and is followed by the Verbal test, which consists of a dozen or so questions, administered verbally, regarding material from the class.
Click here for the class schedule. No advance sign-up is required for any of these beginner classes; simply show up on a day/time that is convenient for you. Classes will happen rain or shine (unless there is lightning, in which case Rigging class will be cancelled for safety). There are classes offered every single day of the week. On the weekends, some classes are offered multiple times a day. On average, it takes people two to three weeks to take all three classes. However, it is possible to complete all three classes in a weekend or even on one weekend day, if you are extremely motivated. Learn more about these classes on our Beginner Sailing Classes page.
Once you have passed the Rigging and Verbal tests, you will be granted your Mercury Green Rating, which permits you to sail a Mercury by yourself (or with another Mercury Green member) in Green Flag, or light wind, conditions. With your Mercury Green rating, you will also have access to Mainsail 1 and Mainsail 2 classes to improve your sailing. However, with a 30-Day Learn to Sail and Paddle membership, you will be unable to take the Mercury Yellow test. Advance sign-up is required for the Mainsail 1 and Mainsail 2 classes.
How do I start sailing?
Once you have your Mercury Green Rating, simply bring your card to the dockhouse with a Mercury mainsail and they will check you out. If the wind is too strong (i.e. Yellow or Red Flag), the staff may require that you go sailing in a Keel Mercury or with someone more experienced.
We are open 7 days a week and open sailing is always available during our operating hours, weather permitting. Boats are available on a first-come-first-serve basis only; reservations are not accepted.
How do I start paddling?
We offer kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding at Community Boating for those interested in paddling. Our kayaks are easy to use, and we have both single and double sit-on-top kayaks. If you already have experience with kayaking or paddleboarding, simply go to the Dock House to sign out for either kayaking or paddleboarding to receive a paddle. If you are inexperienced with paddling, visit our calendar page to find the next available Kayaking or Stand-up Paddleboard class. Learn more about these classes on our Paddling Class page.
How can I sail on windier days or take guests (non-members) out with me?
To do either of those things, you need your Mercury Yellow Rating, which is not available to 30-day members. If you decide you enjoy sailing at Community Boating, you can purchase a full year membership at the the Full Year Renewal Rate after your 30-day membership. This Renewal Rate provides you a discount off of the Adult Full Year membership with Free Guest Privileges included and can be purchased at any time up to a week (7 days) after your 30-day membership expires.
I already know how to sail! Do I really need to sit through these classes?
Yes, unfortunately you will still need to take these classes to become oriented to our standards and procedures. The Learn to Sail and Paddle membership is ideal for those who want to learn how to sail, as only the Mercury green rating is available for these members. For more information about our other memberships, please visit our Membership page.
I purchased a Groupon or Living Social voucher. How do I activate my membership?
To activate your new membership, please print out your voucher. If you cannot print the voucher but have a phone/tablet on which you can pull up the voucher, that works too (we just need to scan that barcode). Please come by any time during open hours to redeem your voucher deal.
IMPORTANT: The deadline to redeem your voucher and activate your membership is listed on your voucher. After the expiration date, you may still redeem the value (even next year), but you will lose the promotional discount (your voucher will essentially become a gift certificate). If you would like to purchase another 30-day, 60-day or full-year membership, you may use the price of your voucher toward one of those memberships, but the promotional discount does not apply.
The voucher is ONLY valid for the 30-Day Learn to Sail & Paddle membership. If you decide you would like a Full Year membership, you can purchase a full year membership at the the Full Year Renewal Rate after your 30-day membership. This Renewal Rate provides you a discount off of the Adult Full Year membership with Free Guest Privileges included and can be purchased at any time up to a week (7 days) after your 30-day membership expires.
