The sailboats used in this program are RS Venture Connect sailboats equipped with adaptive sip and puff technology and wheelchair accessable seeting, custom-modified 23-foot Sonars, Ideal 18s, and Keel Mercuries. These boats allow a participant to either learn how to sail or simply enjoy a ride on the Charles. The boats have been manufactured or adapted with contoured and supportive seating as well as higher booms so people do not have to move from side-to-side when the boat turns. The RS Venture Connect has easily adjustable rigging so that all control lines can lead to a central point. Adaptive equipment can be configured as best fits the sailor, with options for tiller-style steering and mechanically assisted steering. In addition, the boats used in this program are extremely stable and safe because of added ballast. For additional safety there will always be a certified staff member on the boat. We also have a Hoyer lift mounted to our dock to assist in lifting individuals in and out of the boats.
But that’s not all! Members who wish to challenge themselves further and can safely do so may request to use the other boats in our fleet. Please inquire with program staff about your interests, goals, challenges, and we’ll work together to skipper and crew!
