The Revival of Tremolino – Lateener Talk
Oct 3 @ 6:30 pm – Oct 3 @ 8:00 pm

The Revival of Tremolino–––Joseph Conrad’s Mediterranean Lateener Built and Sailed again in 21st Century New England.

Join us for a presentation by experiential educator and traditional boatbuilding advocate Lance Lee about building and sailing Trem, the scaled down replica of the Balancelle Joseph Conrad describes in his rite of passage sea adventure Tremolino. Mr. Lance Lee, founder of the Maine Apprenticeshop, has spent 50 years in the maritime world of experiential education, initiating several major international boatbuilding and seamanship projects, including Atlantic Challenge International. He and his colleague Arista Holden have most recently begun Scholarshipwrights, an educational venture joining traditional boatbuilding and scholarly writing, in Nobleboro, Maine. Scholarshipwrights seeks to empower individuals and strengthen communities through building and sailing traditional wooden boats: “It is the hardship in it that results in a very fierce pride, a sense of well being, resourcefulness, a certain steadiness, patience, and a practiced (rather than professed) integrity” (Lee)

The talk will be held on Friday, October 3rd from 6:30PM to 8PM, and sailing sessions with Captain Arista Holden will be available Saturday, October 4th at 10AM to noon, 12:30PM to 2:30PM, and 3PM to 5PM. Sign-ups are limited to 4 people per session, first come, first serve, in person at the talk. For more information, e-mail Arista Holden arista.holden@gmail.com.
